Working his way back to playing football again, Makana has found a path of transformation for himself and his fitness goals. After a difficult set of life circumstances last year, he discovered a free 12-week online program that inspired him back to healthy eating and body fitness and renewed self-confidence. Here is Makana’s Success Story on his journey back to fitness.
How did you get re-started on your fitness journey?
My family is athletic and I always have been too, but I was never really dedicated to it, I just sort of fell into it. I played football at high school and then at college in Santa Rosa and was in great physical condition but I was doing more for others than for myself. Last July, a few difficult events in my life shook me up — they lit something up in me that told me that I had to put the past behind me, get myself together, and start life new. I decided to start all over again!
Why did you choose The ZOO?
I moved from Hawai’i to Oregon in July and began working at The ZOO in August. At the time I had been going to another gym, kind of half-heartedly. I didn’t really enjoy all the weight-lifting posing. Once I started working at The ZOO, I liked the more relaxed, accepting atmosphere, and I was able to work out every night right after work. It is very convenient for me.
What fitness routine did you choose?
Last July, I began searching the internet for health and fitness transformational stories of other people. I read many inspiring stories and training “systems” that others found useful. Something resonated deeply in me when I read Kris Gethin’s story and it was his 12-Week Daily Transformational Program that was the catalyst for me. Other’s may find another training program for themselves, but for me, Kris’ story and his words were the key to unleashing something in me.
What are your fitness goals?
I want to play football again, but this time with my whole heart and focus in it. I have my sights set on the Portland Area Football team. At the start of the 12-week program, I was 252 lbs., now I’m at 195. My waist size has gone from 38 to 34 … and now I even wear a belt! To be ready for football, I will need to gain muscle mass so my next goal is to get back up to 205 lbs. but muscle, not fat.
What is your workout routine?
During Kris Gethin’s 12-week program I followed his daily eating and workout routines. Now that I am through the program, I choose different 4-week body-building routines that I find on the internet and work my way through them. Typically, I do weight-strength training with free weights 30-45 minutes a day, focusing on different body areas each day, and taking a rest day every 3rd day.
What else do you do to support your fitness journey?
I have completely changed my eating habits! I prepare my meals for the week on Sunday and Wednesday and throughout each day I eat every 2-3 hours. My new go-to snacks are bananas and celery and peanut butter. If you saw how I used to eat you would be amazed! I used to be a spam, noodles, canned tuna guy! Whatever was convenient I ate. Now I think ahead and make healthier choices. I used to add ketchup or soy sauce to everything I ate – now I add flavor with ginger, cayenne, lemon, and lime juice. I really love it, it’s not an effort. Oh and I drink lots of water, about a gallon a day.
What advice do you have for others?
Believe you can do it. I participated in The ZOO’s Guns-Buns-Ab Challenge last month. I can now do 100 push-ups non-stop and hold the plank for 4 minutes. I have amazed myself how I’ve been able to do this! You don’t need a lot of money to get back in shape. Join a gym and then look on the internet to find the routines that inspire you. There is free knowledge out there to help each person get back to where they want to be.
