José Trevino’s story: Don’t Wait!


What motivated you to get started on a fitness plan?

I realized that I’m only getting older, and I’m not getting any younger. Therefore I decided it was time to do something about it now, before I get too old; or maybe even too big. I want to live longer, and see my daughter graduate college and walk her down the aisle. Also, I’d really like to be able to run with her, and get fit enough to work out together.

Why did you join The ZOO?

I noticed that all of the equipment was new and well kept, they were offering classes, and it was at a very fair price. Also, it’s so close to home, it really makes it easy for me to go, and I love it!

What were your fitness goals when you started?  How are you doing on your fitness goals?

My first goal weight is 200 lbs. I’d like to reach this goal in order to be able to train harder, and run with my daughter. Currently, I weight 265 lbs., whereas I used to weigh 310 lbs. I’m slowly getting there if I work at it, but it’s hard. I’ve noticed that I feel younger even though I’m getting older, and that helps to motivate me and to try to reach my ultimate goal.

What is your exercise routine?

I work out 3 to 4 times a week. I do different body parts, for example, I start with a stretch then work my legs and Abs (2 to 3 sets 12 to 15 reps) then I work on my chest muscles using 3 to 5 different stations or free weights (only 20 seconds to 30 seconds rest). Then I do cardio for a half hour with a goal of burning 300 calories or up to 1 ½ hrs in order to burn 1200 plus calories.

How has it changed since you started at The ZOO?

Since I started working out, I’ve noticed that I feel healthier, balanced, and lighter on my feet; which also mean I feel less pain in my body. I’ve also noticed that I fall asleep with more ease, and wake up feeling well rested. It’s also become a sort of a habitual thing for me because when I don’t work out I feel that something is missing, and that my body needs it in order to function.

 What advice would you give to others who want to get back on a fitness plan?

I would tell them to do it for themselves, not for anyone or anything else. Make sure you are eating healthy, or as healthy as you possibly can. Try to take a good multivitamin and eat your servings of healthy fruits and vegetables. Also, make sure while you work out to focus on your breathing and technique, especially when starting out. It’s important to make goals, but my advice would be to just start now. Don’t put it off until tomorrow or Monday.
